September Driving School Report

September Driving School Report

  • End of season finale
  • Well, what a year we’ve had.
  • The last school of 2018 was to be both challenging and successful.

A recent accident meant that Alex Summers, one of our regular instructors, was only able to spectate from the sidelines. We were however lucky enough to be able to call on the services of our latest recruit to the driving school team, 2012 British Hillclimb Champion Trevor Willis, who just happened to have been announced two days before as Champion Elect for 2017. Congratulations to Trevor and best wishes to Alex for a speedy recovery.

The weather gods were definitely not smiling in the morning as it was lashing down with rain just as the keenest participants were arriving. We were lucky enough to get a break in the weather whilst we did the track walk, then it continued again as we started first runs.
The benefit of the wet tarmac for first timers, was that they were able to get used to the low levels of grip rather than having first runs in the dry, and then having the grip dashed by a sudden downpour.

Best Novice went to Matthew Cartmel in his somewhat potent VW Golf. Matthew dealt well with the general lack of grip, which was exacerbated by the excess amounts of power that he had at his disposal.

Dave Moore who had made the journey from Cornwall to use his recently acquired Mk2 Ford Escort, won the prize for Most Improved, having demonstrated a steady improvement of both lines and control over the four marked runs.

The prize for Overall Winner went to the “tamer of the beast” that was Andrew Cottrill in his ferocious Subaru Impreza. A well deserved award for being able to keep the beast under control. Rumour has it that it may have been useful practice for a future Mod Prod Subaru grudge match at Shelsley!

The track did dry out after lunch, and a handful of mechanical retirements meant that we were able to get a few more runs in than usual, and those that took them all got 10 (yes, ten!) in total.

Given that this was the final driving school this year, we are now able to announce that the Overall Winner with the highest score from all five driving schools was Chris Westwood, who will have the opportunity to drive a works sports car courtesy of our sponsors Radical. Congratulations to Chris – enjoy the experience.

We will shortly be announcing the dates for the Driving Schools in 2018. Be sure to book early to ensure you secure your place drivingschool@mac1901.co.uk
