ABOUT THE MIDLAND AUTOMOBILE CLUB

The club was established at The Grand Hotel in Birmingham on 11th January 1901 by a number of prominent members of the early motor industry whilst Queen Victoria was still on the throne.

Our first hill climb was held nine months later at Gorcott Hill and then Weatheroak near Birmingham and more famously Sun Rising Hill near Stratford and Middle Hill at Broadway, but events on the public road were soon banned leading to the club leasing Shelsley Walsh in 1905 where we have been ever since.

From this beginning, the club has never stood still, organising a variety of events spread over many disciplines from sprints to sporting trials, as well as the Shelsley Walsh speed hill climbs. We feature something for every motor sport and motoring enthusiast including classic car tours, breakfast clubs and social events ranging from dinner dances, quizzes, factory visits, film shows, and talks by famous personalities.

2001 saw the MAC begin its centenary year with a wonderful dinner at the Grand Hotel exactly 100 years to the day at the same venue where 400 members sat down to dinner and many more would have liked to attend. What would that elite band of 1901 have thought? They would surely have been very proud. It was an evening of some emotion and some of the members felt that a piece of history was being made. Murray Walker, who began his commentating career at Shelsley Walsh, was the guest speaker and he held the room in rapt attention for forty minutes.

The club has always been innovative. In 1932, the BBC chose Shelsley Walsh for its first ever outside broadcast. Electronic timing was first introduced at Shelsley Walsh and in 1998 the club organised the first-ever classic trial on the Isle of Man.

The MAC continues to grow and develop, continuing in its role as ‘the heart of motorsport in the Midlands’.

We look forward to welcoming you some day soon.
