Best of British at Shelsley Walsh
1st and 2nd June
Shelsley Walsh welcomes stars of international motorsport on 2nd June when World Trials Champion Dougie Lampkin MBE makes his Shelsley Walsh motorcycle debut at the ‘Best of British’ weekend while BTCC hero Anthony Reid will attack the 114 year old hill with the world beating BAC Mono single seater supercar. The 160mph British Hill Climb Championship cars will be gunning for points in their two Top 12 Run Offs on Sunday together with some breath taking blowing class run action too. Last year saw the quickest time of 2018 set at this June meeting when David Uren set 23.53 seconds during one of the most thrilling run offs seen for over a decade at Shelsley Walsh.
Lampkin, who is a 12 times Trials World Champion both indoor and outdoor and an incredible 12 times winner of the tough Scottish Six Day Trial, will attempt a never-been-done-before wheelie record against the clock up the 1000 yard hill. His huge experience will be drawn upon as he leaves the line with his front wheel already in the air while elsewhere around the venue he will put on display some of his stunning two wheeled skills.
“I’m really looking forward to coming to such a prestigious venue as Shelsley Walsh that I’ve heard so much about over the years from motorsport friends so to now have the chance to set a record on one wheel and get my name alongside the greats of motorsport is something very special. I’ll have a couple of attempts at it and see what time I can get down to. That’ll be fun as I haven’t had the wheelie bike out for a while so the pressure is on and I like that.” Said the Yorkshireman.
Driving the BAC Mono, Anthony Reid is no stranger to driving fast cars, winning touring car races in Japan, Germany and most of all in the BTCC here in the UK as well as driving numerous times at Le Mans 24 hours where he finished on the podium in a Porsche 962. Hill climbing is no stranger to his repertoire too having been one of the highlight drivers at the Goodwood Festival of Speed shoot out in recent years. With a 2.5 litre 305bhp engine and just 580kgs, the road registered BAC Mono will be something many have never seen in competition before, let alone at Shelsley Walsh over both days, 1st and 2nd June.
Quickest man up Shelsley Walsh in 2018, David Uren with his 600bhp Gould GR55B V8, is looking forward to going even quicker this time around after seeing where he can pinch a tenth here and a hundredth there.
“After coming to Shelsley all my life to then win there last year was the highlight of my time in a racing car. The emotions that come over you at the top of the hill are so intense, but then you begin to think how you can go quicker next time! I’ve got a huge amount of competition with Scott Moran, Trevor Willis and Wallace Menzies going so well this year plus Will Hall is always quick at Shelsley so I’ve got to be on my toes, but I’m looking forward to it - at the end of the day, there’s nothing like Shelsley Walsh.”
Fastest man Robert Kenrick has already wowed the fans at Shelsley Walsh this year with victory at the May meeting as he builds up even more speed in his stunning little GWR Raptor single seater with a 1 litre BMW 1000RR engine in the back of it. At this meeting last year he won Man of the Meeting with a mind blowing 24.96 second run with commitment through The Esses like nothing ever seen before.
There will be a new prize given on the Sunday with the ‘MHD Hero of the Day’ Award being a brand new MHD Black Dial CR1 watch courtesy of Shelsley’s Timing partner MHD Watches.
“We wanted to recognise not just the fastest driver up Shelsley Walsh but the most committed driver on race day so we look forward to seeing who digs the deepest through Kennel, Crossing and the Esses.” Said Matthew Humphries of MHD Watches.
