SPEED INTO SPRING STARTS SHELSLEY WALSH FOR 2022

As Shelsley Walsh moves into it’s 117th year of Speed Hill Climb action we look forward to the opening meeting of 2022 over the weekend of May 7th and 8th with the Speed into Spring meeting where drivers can start to build their speed as they learn old favourites or new cars for now is the time to commit to the corners of Shelsley in order to get those record times later on in the season.

There will be a wealth of production cars filling the early classes including Ian Fidoe returning to the hills in his Toyota Yaris GR which will be interesting to see what time appears on the clock, while for Sunrise Sprint Champion Simon Kirton is in his Lotus Exige and Robert Lancaster-Gaye in his ever lovely Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

The single seaters will be the quickest this weekend with Simon Moyse’s red Gould GR59 starting as a stand out but he may well be toe to to with Zach Zammit’s Empire Wraith, Terry Davis’ lovely 2 litre V8 Reynard and the Gould GR55 of Tony Hunt and Terry Graves whom we welcome back on the hill after some engine problems last year so it’s good to see them again. Drivers have to commit hard to win their class in the BMTR Midland Hill Climb Championship over the weekend so every class is a battle within itself before the first Top 12 Run Off of the year on Sunday lunch time and then the second one at the end of the day.

The Paul Matty Sportscars Championship is back with a full entry on Saturday with their two classes of sports cars and single seaters as their friendly battles start off on the hill and and laughed about when the helmets come off, while the MG Car Club Speed Championship run directly after the Lotuses.

Sunday sees the motor bikes too with the usual raft of riders lining up with a fabulous team spirit and camaraderie. Just remember that the outright bike record is 30.16 seconds that is held by Ben Wilkins who has since emigrated to New Zealand so who is around the take his crown? Glyn Poole and Jamie Mitchell are a stand outs for that accolade so lets see who comes out top and the end of Sunday - records maybe not the order of the day with a ‘fresh’ track surface coming out of winter but it’s still so impressive to see them at speed through the Crossing bend with their commitment.

Doors open at 0800 with track action from 0900 that then runs all the way through the day, both days
MAC Members have season long access to all our weekends on the hill while discounted advanced tickets are all online here for both days in May and all out meetings throughout the season:
